Charcoal on Japanese hand-made paper. Original work in black wood frame, mounted and ready to hang. 11.5 x 16.5", (unframed) 17 x 21" (framed) | 2021

When I was five my father didn’t know what to do with me but to play chess. When asked if we could play something else, like zoom some of my toy cars around his office, he said, 'you may be five, but I am not.’ The next time we met we went to a toy store and he bought me a little model Mercedes to add to my toy car collection. Back in my father's spacious Land Rover, I clutched onto my new car in my child's hand. As we rode home through busy streets I pondered about how adults and children play the same games, only when you are an adult the toys just get bigger. Being a child is practicing being an adult. Playing chess is practicing making real-life decisions. Practice makes perfect. Apparently not.
